The documentary “The Magic of Podlasie. Whisperers’ directed by Małgorzata Szyszka is an analysis of the contemporary role of whisperers – folk healers from Podlasie, whose practices originate from a syncretic combination of folk medicine, religion and elements of magic. The documentary addresses issues in cultural anthropology, psychology and medicine, showing whisperers as a phenomenon that combines science and faith. The film raises questions about the role of whisperers in the modern world. Experts such as ethnographers, psychotherapists and Podlasie residents discuss who whisperers are and why modern society still relies on traditional methods to heal the body and soul.
