In 2025, the Social Work Section of the Polish Social Society celebrates its 30th anniversary. The establishment of the Social Work Section was the initiative of Prof. Władysław Kwaśniewicz and Prof. Krzysztof Frysztacki from the Jagiellonian University. The justification for its establishment was the need for sociology to engage in the profound changes in Polish social policy and social assistance after 1989 and to develop the education of social workers at the academic level within sociological studies. The activities of the Section constitute an institutional framework for strengthening the links between sociology as a field of science and social practice and for the integration of people and communities interested in the scientific and practical aspects of social work. The debates undertaken within the Section cover such disciplines as: sociology, social work, social policy, social pedagogy, law, and sociological subdisciplines: applied sociology, sociology of social problems, sociology of poverty, sociology of homelessness, sociology of unemployment, and sociology of disability. The activity of the Section members focuses on the discourse on the place of social work and social assistance in the social policy system, recognition of changing old and new problem areas and education for social work in Poland, as well as the problem of the effectiveness of methods and methods of action used in social work.
